My name is Dr Rose Christopher and I am a qualified Clinical Psychologist, trained at the University of Birmingham. I currently work within Child and Adolescent services with in the NHS. I have extensive experience understanding and working with childhood trauma and how this may present in a number of ways, for example struggling to manage emotions, finding relationships hard, and difficulties processing events. I believe that the most important aspect to allow change in therapy is the relationship between client and therapist so will ensure that we have a safe and approachable relationship. I am down to earth, friendly and grounded.

ABOUT THERAPY

Sometimes it can be hard to reach out for help, to know where to start or if a therapist is right for you. I specialise in supporting people to understand complex or developmental trauma. This where in our early life, e.g. child or young adulthood, we have been exposed to or have experienced things that were scary, abusive or unhealthy, often more than once or repeatedly. This can mean lots of different things to different people but can include physical, sexual, emotional or psychological abuse. This can also at times be referred to as relational trauma, which means that often the people who were involved in these experiences were adults who were part of our family, close to us or should have been responsible for protecting us.

This can impact on us in lots of different ways, you might be feeling low, anxious or angry, struggling with relationships or wanting to make sense of things that have happened in the past. Therapy can help to start to do that. Perhaps you are adult who would like to understand some of the difficulties that you have now in the context of your childhood experiences. Or maybe someone who has children who desperately does not want to repeat your own experiences but is struggling to figure out how to break that cycle and do things differently.

I can also support schools and organisations to better understand complex trauma by providing training, consultation or supervision to staff.

I offer a free 15 minute consultation call where we can discuss what you are hoping to get out of therapy and establish if I’m the right therapist for you. There is no obligation to continue after this, so reach out and see if we can start to make changes today.

ASSESSMENT

I offer individualised and trauma informed assessments to help understand your difficulties and what might be underlying and maintaining them. I do this to help understand how events and relationships that you have experienced in the past may be impacting on you now. I can offer this as written report as well if needed.

THERAPY

Individual therapy: I deliver integrative trauma-informed therapy that usually consists of 1 hour weekly sessions, working on your goals, which we will establish together in the consultation/assessment phase. I use an style that draws on different therapeutic models but I am particularly interested in how our past experiences shape how we respond in the moment. I use techniques from dialectical behavioural therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and trauma informed therapies.

Parenting support: I can deliver therapeutic parenting interventions to help support individuals to parent in a trauma-informed, gentle and empathetic way. This looks to understand your own attachment and parenting experiences and the neurobiology of child development to be able to support you to parent your child and develop practical skills as well as understanding.
